Melodies that don't sound
Melodies that don’t sound is a multidisciplinary stage work that blends music, sound art, dance theatre, and contemporary dance.
Melodies that don't sound opens up a fertile meeting ground for sonic and movement-based creativity.
On stage, choreography and music performed by three dancers and a singer form a richly layered dialogue. The soundscape is created by singer-songwriter Emma Salokoski and musician-beatboxer Felix Zenger. The cast—representing competitive dance, contemporary dance, and acrobatics—strengthens the interplay between dance styles and showcases the diverse ways the human body can move.
The performance explores family dynamics, diving into the interaction patterns of different types of families. Intergenerational communication, conflict, comfort, and forgiveness are central themes. What communication tools does each person use to navigate their world?
Melodies that don't sound highlights the importance of family in an individualistic culture. By reflecting a variety of family structures, it emphasizes the uniqueness and irreplaceability of one’s close community, made up of meaningful human relationships. In today’s society, about one-third of families do not fit the traditional nuclear family model.
The creative process behind the piece included interviews with a range of families.
